“While most of our colleagues are still in bed, you all are doing the best thing you could do right now: Raising money for Water For People, and exercising.”
This sentiment of caring for others and self, kicked off the 2016 Tri-Con 5K Fun Run (or walk!) on the Ocean City, MD, boardwalk. A combination of 41 runners and 18 sponsors (including my current employer, Entech Engineering, and my previous employers, MBA and Fisher Tank Company) made this the most successful run in years, raising more than $2,500 for Water For People, a non-profit that brings sustainable clean drinking water and sanitation to third-world countries.
Race conditions were sunny but sweaty, with very high humidity. Runners were motivated from the start with the Theme from Rocky, then were challenged by a missing orange cone at the turn-around, resulting in a 5K+ race for the speedier runners. Two-time Men’s Winner, Pono Hanson, was near the front of the pack, but David Wilkes held on to his lead at the finish line, crossing in 22:27. After a number of second place finishes, David was thrilled to finally get his name on the trophy.
Chesapeake AWWA Officer, Teresa DiGenova, who signed up at the last minute, smoked the women with a time of 28:21. All athletes were treated to fresh oranges, Energy Bars from Entech Engineering, and bright green finishers ribbons after the race. Thank you to everyone involved for their commitment to clean drinking water and to their health!
